” LIFE BEFORE DEATH. STRENGTH BEFORE WEAKNESS. JOURNEY BEFORE DESTINATION”
I’ve been told repeatedly how awesome this series is. but honestly i’ve never expected it to be that awesome nor did i expect to love that much! ( i like to have low expectations so i don’t get disappointed. even if it was sanderson!!)
not only did i love it, but also it became one of my all time favorites! ( i included it in my favorite shelf!!)
name: the way of kings ( the stormlight archive-1)
author: brandon sanderson ( THE MAN!)
genre: adult high fantasy
pages: 1007
publishing date: august 31st 2010
publisher: Tor books
synopsis :
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.
It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.
One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.
Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan’s motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.
The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.
Speak again the ancient oaths:
Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.
and return to men the Shards they once bore.
The Knights Radiant must stand again.
spoilers free review :
oh boy, oh boy where do i start! i can only be this speechless when the book is beyond awesomeness!!
i’ve heard how great this book was and how people who didn’t enjoy the mist born trilogy (which i loved) loved this book. but hearing how great it was and seeing people recommend it over and over did not in any way make me anticipate what the book presented!
the world building is beyond perfect. so detailed and well thought and creative. everything from the religion to history, lifestyle, and education. i’ve never read such a book with a world building so amazing and well done and not at all boring with all the details!.
it left me wanting more and with so many questions. forgive my lack of adjectives to describe the book. but it had something that made me instantly fall in love with it. and wanting to discover every aspect of this amazing world and characters.
” the purpose of the storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but give you questions to think upon. too often, we forget that ”
the characters and the plot were well developed as well. the characters had depth and diversity. i grew attached to them. i admired them (KALADIN!!) they were all interesting.
the plot of course had unexpected twists and turns. the last bit of the book left dumbfounded i couldn’t grasp what happened. i was left with so many questions which i can’t wait for the answers to present themselves in the next books.
gushing and spoilers!
that ending though!!!
” THE TRUE DESOLATION COMES “
the lost Radiant! wit!! sadeas’s betrayal!!!! the voidbringers!!!!!!!!
of course it wouldn’t be a sanderson’s book without an awesome-plot twisting-jaw dropping ending!! ( was that grammatically correct!! who cares?!)
the thing with the voidbringers and the knights of Radiants as well as Dalinar’s visions was so AMAZING!
ahh szeth, how can i decipher my feelings toward him?!! i didn’t at all foresee the motives of his master-king taravangian- ” what’s the matter with that dude?!!” my response toward knowing that he want’s Dalinar dead!!
aside from kaladin, jasnah is my favorite! she is so smart and mysterious. she has this strict, scary front but she’s absolutely a dear!!
back to the ending. i honestly don’t know what to make of sadeas but after his betrayal i want to strangle him!!
sweet Dalinar stepping and kicking his nephew’s butt!. his character finally seems to have some clarity when everything went to hell! ( no joke!) i can’t wait to see what will happen to him next. hopefully nothing awful!
Quotes :
” past failures does not prove that there is not chance in the future, yes? ”
” well, i myself find that respect is like manure. use it where needed, and growth will flourish. spread it on too thick, and things will just start to smell ”
” i don’t know what i am either . a bridgeman ? a surgeon ? a soldier? a slave? those are all just labels. inside, i’m me. a very different mw than i was a year ago, but i can’t worry about that, so i just keep moving and hope my feet will take me where i need to go.”
” a man’s emotions are what define him, to control is the hallmark of true strength. to lack feeling is to be dead, but to act on every feeling is to be a child ”
” it doesn’t matter what you create. it matters what you create before anyone else “
Can’t agree with you more!!! It’s a must read for anyone loving high fantasy with epic world building. 💛💛💛

I’ve been trying to read this one. but I’m stuck at about halfway through. It’s so long that I’ve kinda just lost interest. It held me in the beginning, but then it fizzled out. :-\
