HII
at the beginning of the month I read poison study a very loved, popular YA book.
I didn’t want to set my expectations too high, and I’ve been delaying reading it for some time now. and I’m glad I did because having my expectations low and being surprised of how good the book was is far better than being disappointed!
name: poison study ( study-1)
author : maria v.snyder
genre: YA fantasy
pages: 409
publishing date: october 1st 2005
synopsis :
Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…
About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.
And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.
As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear.
this book took me by surprise. it was just very enjoyable and page turner. as I read on I dreaded the moment of finishing it! and I immediately ordered the next two books.
the writing wasn’t the most magical or beautiful, but it kept the pace flowing easily and made me read on nonstop. it was easy, and beautiful, and made things enjoyable.
the world building was good. given that this is only the first book I wasn’t I wasn’t mad we didn’t get to see everything. it was actually good how the author explained everything. it wasn’t like info dumping or anything. but a good way to lay the foundation and letting it be explored further more in the next books.
the plot was exciting. the choice between death and poison tasting really appealed to me. there were some famous YA tropes, but they were written properly! I guess it’s because this book was written almost 13 years that it avoided the over use of those tropes?!
the characters were really enjoyable and had depth. actually the characters were my favorite thing in this book. Yelena and Valek and all the other side characters were a good cast for this story.
Yay I’m so glad you liked this series!! Poison Study is one of my favourite books!
