As a Red, Darrow grew up working the mines deep beneath the surface of Mars, enduring backbreaking labor while dreaming of the better future he was building for his descendants. But the Society he faithfully served was built on lies. Darrow’s kind have been betrayed and denied by their elitist masters, the Golds—and their only path to liberation is revolution. And so Darrow sacrifices himself in the name of the greater good for which Eo, his true love and inspiration, laid down her own life. He becomes a Gold, infiltrating their privileged realm so that he can destroy it from within.

A lamb among wolves in a cruel world, Darrow finds friendship, respect, and even love—but also the wrath of powerful rivals. To wage and win the war that will change humankind’s destiny, Darrow must confront the treachery arrayed against him, overcome his all-too-human desire for retribution—and strive not for violent revolt but a hopeful rebirth. Though the road ahead is fraught with danger and deceit, Darrow must choose to follow Eo’s principles of love and justice to free his people.

He must live for more

I can’t seem to place my thoughts in order when it comes to this book!. the writing was good. I enjoyed it from the first book.

the world-building, the characters, and the plot caught my attention more than the writing style. although my attention slipped a moment when describing some battle scenes…

did we get more history about the fascinating world Brown has created? YES! and more aspects of the world were explained ? YES YES! I really did enjoy the new facts and places we get to see\know in this book. the world seems to be a great setting that I needed to know more of. because it was this rich and fascinating fictional place that had depth and Brown can write so many good stories in it.

ahh the characters. my babies. my sweet sweet pumpkins. one of the things I adore about this series are the characters. they’re gray and have depth and diverse. I sympathized with them a lot. you can never truly hate the villains of the story. which is why this was so heart wrenching!

Darrow my love continued to grow. his inner conflicts and not so great decisions, and his self- discovery journey through this book made me want to slap him, hug him, and cry for him!

the pace of the plot was good. the twists kept me at the edge of my seat. and Oh that ending, Oh that cliffhanger!! I didn’t know it was going to be so emotionally and mentally exhausting. I was so foolish to think that I can spend some time after reading this book and not owning the next book!!
